A Wicker Park foxhole

The last days in Chicago were spent in an Airbnb studio apartment in Wicker Park.

Wicker Park is often called a "hipster" neighborhood, but the truth is something diagonal. In the 90s hipsters were moving in, and since then the young families and professionals have been pushing the true hipsters further afield, leaving perhaps commuting hipsters or moneyed hipsters. Nevertheless, despite the increasing wealth of the local citizens, there remain many "hip" stores and inexpensive and trendy restaurants. The neighborhood vibe will foreshadow our May trip to Portland, where the "dream of the 90s is still alive."

Our apartment was just off Milwaukee Avenue, where we dined up and down the street. We had ramen (Kizuki Ramen and Izakaya), Hawaiian (Mahalo), Mexico City-style comfort food (Fonda Frontera), hearty classic brunch (Bongo Room), sushi burrito (En Hakorre), expensive doughnuts (Stan's Donuts), New Haven style pizza (Piece Brewery & Pizzeria), cheeseburgers (Umami Burger), vegan (Native Foods Cafe), Indian English pub food (Pub Royale), sausage (Bangers and Lace), and that's a lot of restaurants. Christine and I went out to eat with Bobby, a well seasoned restaurant eater by this point, and we met up with all of the friends and coworkers we wanted to say good bye to.

I didn't earlier realize, but Google has the name of the apartment building as "the Foxhole."

Pictures to document life in the Foxhole

We stayed in the third floor, rear apartment, of the Foxhole.

A little porch outside the back door where a few days it was warm enough to hang out, have some beers, and send some emails.

A little bee on the bed. Check out the pallets used for decorations and Christmas lights providing ambient lighting -- they are actually useful for providing soft light for the parents while the baby sleeps.

Bob's travel crib set up in front of the exposed brick wall. Super hip, huh? Bobby did a lot of crying in this crib in his first few days at the Foxhole.
