Exploring warrens of the Borough

Image
Having a toddler is also a lot of fun. And London is a big fun city to explore, for toddlers and dads alike. Every morning, we talk about busses. Bobby earnestly asks if we can take a bus. On most weekdays, we tell him that we have to go to school but maybe during the weekend we can take a bus. He then says " Mummy take bus " or " Baba take bus ." If one of us leaves early, he says it's for us to take the bus. Luckily, he rarely complains much (knock on wood) about having to go to school and how it prevents him from taking the bus. On the weekends, we plan our days around how we can ride in public carriage. Some weekends, we take the bus to parks we could walk to, or we take bus rides to parks in adjacent neighborhoods, especially Stoke Newington , which is just a very nice little village with a big park (Clissold). Today started early and terribly. Who knows what time the little guy woke up, but he woke up his baba at six to tell him he needed help with t...

Summer - part 1 - May through June

Image
Strutting into one of the first sunny days of the season, in the courtyard of our building, 10 May. Highbury Fields is a big park near our house. This curved street along the park's edge is called Highbury Crescent. We all like the stately old houses along the crescent. In this photo, Bob, sporting his jean jacket from his cousin-in-law Beth, is strutting toward the Highbury Fields playground, where we passed many a sunny (and not sunny) summer morning. 11 May. The FD Linges' ongoing European vacation, with this 26 May stop at the Colosseum. For Mum's and Baba's anniversary this year, 8 June, we ventured to the biggest grocery store in the neighborhood, Waitrose, where we had some coupons, and bought ingredients for a special family dinner. Bob was tearing through the store, filling his shopping basket with whatever the hell he felt like, Baba trailing behind and placing those items back on the shelf. The next day, we went to Lord'...

Summer - part 2 - July through August

Image
Eating french fries and watching England play Colombia, 3 July. The match ended in a draw with Harry Kane scoring England's only goal. England lived to play several more matches, eventually making it to the quarterfinals. It was a very fun time to be in London. Bobby would agree. He got to watch a lot of football and have a lot of fries and cheeseburgers  at Ley Ley's  over the summer. Too bad Ley Ley's closed at the end of August to seek a lease in a higher traffic spot. One way to beat the heat is to get wet. Here is Bobby in the fountains at Granary Square; he's dressed in high-tech sports clothes courtesy of his nainai. Granary Square is part of large urban redevelopment site near King's Cross station, where Victorian industrial buildings, having fallen into disuse, have been refurbished into a modern consumer playground with restaurants and shops. This big building was formerly a store for grain, and from here it could travel by barge (on the Re...

Picasso at the Tate Modern, travelling through time

Image
This summer, Bobby made his second trip to the Tate Modern. The occasion was to view a biographical exhibit of Picasso's works from 1932. Bobby, in this year, Picasso was painting to stay relevant after having already achieved fame but also dealing with the dissolution of his marriage (caused, of course, by his infidelity) -- why is this not resonating more with you?! Turns out, the day became not so much about a series of paintings as the timeline of life, including Picasso's and our own, as well as everyday lessons in parenting. Successful adventures with our young boy require us to get right the timings of naps, meals, and snacks. This particular Sunday, we messed it up. The ideal museum trip -- at least when you want to meaningfully observe the works and read the descriptions -- requires the boy to sleep in the Ergo Baby carrier while Baba soaks in the museum. Otherwise, the boy would prefer to run through the museum, or if he's super tired and irritable, just throw a...

How to tour London

Image
Living in a tourist city, you may well find yourself someday a tour guide to scattered friends and family showing up for a visit. Having passed our one year London residency milestone late this Spring, our organised tour is becoming increasingly standardized but with a few different loops. Dai Meng Guo, a white guy from Erie, Pennsylvania, with a Chinese name, stopped by London recently. He, along with his girlfriend, plus Christine and Bobby, went on my Westminster Tour. New friends, plus old friends from undergraduate Chinese class at University of Pittsburgh. Notice Big Ben all bandaged up while he gets a face lift -- same for Parliament. Westminster circuit For the Westminster Tour, we started at Trafalgar Square, saw that old one-armed admiral on a pole (Horatio Nelson), walked down Whitehall, past 10 Downing Street (of course barely visible behind the security establishment holding back Theresa May's thronging fans), to Westminster Bridge (from where one can ca...
